Dubbing Vhs

No Video to Blu Ray   by Susan Gavin

There hasn’t always been video. A short history from then to Blu ray.

Way back when there was just television. One channel upgraded to two channels and sometimes three. The screens were small and only in blk/wht. The remote was called the kid closest to the TV. Sometimes when dad had time off a kid got delegated to be the remote all day. Only about three to four new movies came out each year. Most of them were pretty good since they had to be to get return viewers. Million dollar budgets were unheard of and movie stars still mingled with the little people. For a kid going to the movies was the highlight of the summer. Theatres used to sell books with twenty four tickets at the beginning of summer vacation. That way every Saturday all summer long the parents got rid of the kids for awhile. Going to the drive in was the coolest thing ever. In the back of the family wagon with movie food and two features. Little kid heaven.

Along came the Video Home System (VHS) then later Video Cassette Recorder (VCR) same thing. The television had progressed amazingly by this time. Color had been around for quite awhile. The VHS was a perfect compliment to the TV. Now anything on television could be recorded for later viewing or archived in a personal collection. Movie studios, networks and television broadcast stations freaked out thinking it was the end. It was shortly after this that anti-dubbing was initiated. If a tape was dubbed it would playback a picture that was all squiggly and faded in and out. Purchasing a tape meant that multiple viewing’s were available. The only problem was there was a limited number of playbacks. Sometimes into the thirty’s or more. Other times less than ten. Moneys worth was hoped for. Returning to the store for a refund was kind of a joke as it always seemed that the purchaser must have done something wrong. With three record settings SP, LP and SLP each getting progressively worse results the VHS was doomed. Getting acquainted with the anatomy of a VHS tape saved on the expense since a lot of the time the tape just jumped its track. Take it apart carefully, reposition the tape and remember exactly how it went back together would be cause for hero status.

About this time VHS was really to the point of becoming a dime a dozen and cassettes were at every yard sale. Something had to be done.

All hail the DVD. CDs had come out shortly before so the disc phase was in full swing. Imagine being able to buy a full movie on a disc that was so clear it almost brought people to tears. It wasn’t poor vision after all. Dual layer was even better. DVDs are still in production for now. As long as there are still alot of analog televisions out there money is to be made from DVD sales.

Camcorders moved up from tape to having auto burning mini DVDs. Now massive (compared to three years ago) electronic memory allows people to download, edit and burn home movies.
There are lots of budding digital editors growing up out there. Editing software can be found at retail stores but also on many freeware sites. Tie this with USB download and kids will blow us away.

Now there is Blu ray. Fantastic clarity and incredible volume. What more is needed? The only drawback for some is getting the required HDtv. Eventually analog will be gone and there will be HD in every home. A very nice perk with Blu ray is that it will play DVDs. Not to bad with an up convert player. Better than straight DVD. This is like a God send to any movie collector. Having to throw out a collection of hundreds of DVDs is to awful to think about.

What will be next? Who knows but it will be fun to find out. Let’s hope whatever it is will be DVD compatible.

About the Author

Born in Blackfoot,ID. Raised in Pingree,ID. Don’t fret if you have never heard of it. It is so small most people who live there have never heard of it. I am Sue Gavin. Married almost 33yrs. to the same guy. I believe I should get some type of tax credit for a job well done. Pingree for grade school and Blackfoot for most of high school. I was married at 17yrs. and we moved around a bit that first year. I ended up going to 3 different high schools but I did graduate on time. I graduated from a place called Goldendale, WA. They even have one street light there. In the middle of town. On the closest freeway the signs didn’t say next 2 exits. The signs said next 2 intersections. I worked in Retail Grocery for about 20yrs. Before that I was a waitress, host, fry cook, etc. You know, the same thing most of us end up doing at one time or another. In 1993 my husband had a 5000lb vault door (like in a bank) fall on him. Don’t worry he lived. He is just a little disabled. 2007 ended up with me having seizures. Almost unheard of at my age. Especially since I have no prior history of any type of passing out, etc. One seizure fractured a vertebrae and that was the end of my career. Now my hubby and I are trying to make a go of a webstore. Don’t know if this is allowed, but I’m old so I am going to do it anyway. http://www.Storeitdvd.com Life goes up and down. Just be there for the ups!
